Church Development Service (Evangelischer Entwicklungsdienst - EED) is an
organisation of the Churches in Germany. It was established in 1999
and is legally registered as a non-profit organisation.
By means of financial contributions, personnel involvement, scholarships and
consultancy services EED supports the development work of churches, Christian
organisations and the private sector. EED assists partner organisations in
Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania, as well as in south-east Europe and the
Caucasian republics. Partners are churches, ecumenical organisations and
non-government organisations in over 80 countries of the world. In this
worldwide partnership, EED is participating in establishing a fair society. It
takes and promotes action to arouse and enhance people's willingness to stand up
to overcome need, poverty, persecution and violence.
In Germany, EED communicates concerns of development cooperation into churches,
society, politics and the business sector and supports education in parishes,
schools and partnership projects.
EED's guiding principle "Peace through Justice" implies that
future-oriented development should correspond with a culture of non-violent
conflict transformation. Therefore, peace-building is an important field of
action for EED. Through its international programmes, EED supports people who
prevent the violent escalation of conflicts and support peace-building
initiatives. It also seconds peace experts to its partner countries.
The "working unit peace and conflict" supports the peace-building
efforts of local partners e.g. from Sudan with information and lobbying
campaigns in Germany. In addition, it deals with conceptional questions of
peace-orientated development cooperation.
The commitment of many different actors on various levels is necessary to
develop the prerequisites for a just and long-lasting peace. Therefore, EED
takes part in different networks, such as the Working Group on Development and
Peace (FriEnt).
