FriEnt - Working Group on Development and Peace

Methods

During the 1990s, development agencies as well as peace organisations became increasingly active in countries suffering from violent conflicts and war. At the same time, the humanitarian community became more aware of the fact, that development cooperation and humanitarian assistance can have conflict mitigating as well as conflict aggravating influence. There was a felt need to better understand and address causes of violent conflicts, and to design programs and projects according to the complex and ever-changing context of violent conflicts and post-war societies.

Thus, government institutions as well as NGOs have begun to further develop and adjust their planning and management tools in order to assist peace and conflict sensitive approaches to development and peace building. Analytical tools like "Do-No-Harm" and "Peace and Conflict Impact Assessment" (PCIA) support aid agencies and peace organisations to work more effectively in conflict prone societies. However, complex methodology tools are primarily used by Northern organisations, whereas partners in the South often view them rather critical.
