Moving beyond greening the economy

Towards achieving sustainable and just economic systems
19 October 2022

Moving beyond greening the economy is the title and motto of an online workshop that FriEnt together with Sierra Leone Network on the Right to Food (SiLNoRF), Swedwatch and Quakers United Nations Office (QUNO) is organizing during the Geneva Peace Week 2022. It is scheduled on 1st of November 2022 at 3pm CET (online registration is open until 23rd of October).

During the workshop, the participants together with the speakers will explore the potential and experience of a holistic approach toward achieving sustainable and just economic systems that fairly and urgently addresses the root causes of environmental destruction and conflict including damaging patterns of consumption, oppression, and inequality. The participants will get the opportunity to meet the individual speakers and discuss the experience of local actors and ways forward for international policy makers, organizations and institutions working together with the private sector to advance meaningful change toward conflict-sensitive and rights-based approaches to sustainable and just economic transformation. The session will further give opportunity for sharing of experiences with the development and application of tools, e.g., the potential of the UNDP toolkit on heightened human rights due diligence for business in conflict-affected contexts.

This event builds upon conversations and publications that the organizing partners have been facilitating to bring together environmental peacebuilding actors, sustainable economic system practitioners and human rights actors, particularly at the country level, to exchange ideas, and build understanding to “make peace possible”.

The Working Group on Peace and Development (FriEnt) is an association of governmental organisations, church development agencies, civil society networks, and political foundations.
